we interrupt this cray cray

OH HAI.  guess who screwed the pooch on the "toolin' around tuesdays" series.  rather than throw the next giveaway up all hasty like, i'll just announce le winner of tool number two, the crystal glass nail file.  out of 52 comments, 47 wanted in on this jammy.  counting down to random lucky number 39...

haaaaaaaay vanessa, new zealand in the house!! holler at me via email (just check my profile for my address) and we'll get those evil talons tamed.  if you didn't win, come on back tuesday march 4th for a new plaything.  no, seriously, i won't slack this time.  and if you're in desperate need of your own file, head over to sephora or ricky's (no compensation, just enabling your retail therapy needs.)

thanks for all your shout outs on blogger woes, by the way.  i had to disallow anonymous commenters, unfortunately, as waking to an inbox full of spam is ever.  so.  BORING.  i'd really love to hear more from the wordpress camp...what's better in your end of the blogisphere?  anyone care to convince me to jump ship?

  1. I'm also interested to hear about the pros/cons of wordpress!

  2. I use wordpress and like it just fine... although I've never used anything else, so I can't really compare.
I don't have any where near the blog traffic you do, but I get an occasional spam comment. Wordpress catches those and keeps them off my blog. They are available for my review through the "dashboard." I've never had a legit comment get caught in the spam filter either, so bravo on Wordpress spam filtering! And I use the option of reviewing and approving first time commenters, but after one approval, people can comment and see their comment post immediately. No captcha crap...
Overall I'd say wordpress is clean and neat.

  4. I also like wordpress just fine. I'm just starting to build my blog up, but it's so easy to use! I've only had the one spam comment but my dashboard caught it and let me review it before it posted. Pretty much exactly thegarmentfarmer said. :) I have used blogger and moved my sewing only to wordpress because it is so neat and clean. I love the fact that I can like a post and not comment on it!

  5. I just started my blog last year so don't have a ton of experience. However, I can tell you that I have a bunch of spam in my 'spam' folder and only one comment has made it to my blog. And, honestly, that was in spanish and I couldn't read it so it might not have been spam (though it linked to a weirdo blog)! As twirldesigns mentions above I really like being able to follow comments and responses easily on wordpress as well as 'liking' posts. For following blogs I mostly use Google Reader - the "next" bookmarklet is genius.

  6. Wordpress is like the Mac of blogging software. Very clean and easy to use interface, image uploading and handling, and spam filtering, etc. But if you want to use fun fonts, or have more control over your html and layout, and you're using wordpress.com, you have to pay for that (it's cheap and I think worth it but everyone's different). With Blogger, it's free to have a whack at your code and use Google fonts, etc. I have used several blog platforms in my work including a few that went the way of dinosaurs, and Wordpress is the one that has stayed user-intuitive the longest. But all that said, you probably don't need to jump ship because Blogger is great for what you do. Unless you're itching to try something different. I just wish they had better spam filtering services, because that seems to be common blogger woe.

  8. I used to blog with Blogger and just got terribly bored of tech problems and spam...even on my little blog. Wordpress is easier to use, catches whatever spam comes my way and has only once in 4 years erroneously caught a genuine comment! I also found it really easy to port all my content, including photos, over to WP...and I'm a Luddite! Hope this helps.

  9. I'm Wordpress too, but via my own domain so not hosted by Wordpress, which has caused me the odd problem when the rare thing does go awry. Same as the commenter above, I approve first time commenters, then after that if people return they should be able to comment with no approval. I have a spam catcher that automatically recognised spam. But one day for a still unknown reason, comments weren't appearing at all. It turned out that my spam filter forgot all the non spam I'd approved. Now it remembers most, but I am still having to visit spam folder and unspam the odd real comment, re educate it like.
But how much spam is there? Seeing it all captured could make you get really cross with how pointless it is....
But I do hate captcha, but you'd have to be odd to like interpreting skewed characters instead of spending time reading more inspiring blogs...or sewing....or sleeping ...

  10. I use Wordpress for my business website and blogger for my blog and Blogger is SO MUCH EASIER. Yes I am very old and a bit of a luddite, but I never stopped and had to swear at Blogger like I do Wordpress. I even have a developer for it because I can't fathom the darned thing.
Perhaps it's just the devil you know. And Akismet does a stellar job of weeding out spam too. PS THANK YOU for not turning that captcha thing on!!

  11. I have a simple, free wordpress blog. I was at blogspot, but it started giving me issues with uploading photos. All that I do is upload photos and write simple text... so I jumped ship to wordpress. Setting up your theme and such was easier at blogspot and you get more options there, but wordpress has been fine. I was able to import all my previous posts, though all the tags in blogspot became categories in wordpress, which left the wordpress tags slot empty on them.

Wordpress has been great about grabbing out the spam comments. I didn't think I ever got any, till I noticed the option in the comments part of the dashboard called 'spam'. I had 9 in there, from many months of blogging. But I also don't have the traffic you have, Oona. Comment verification is fine, if a little frustrating at times. Don't like the word? refresh it for a new one.

  14. I LOVE wordpress, I'm self hosted with wordpress.org. It's pretty easy to self host unless you start rooting around in the code (then you'll need to know a bit of html, css, php and javascript) but even if you do that since Wordpress is open source there are a zillion tutorials on the internet about how to do basically anything you could ever want to do. The spam is great with their Akismet spam blocker. So far it's caught 24,202 spam comments and only let 43 slip through sooooo I definitely recommend it for spam blocking. I also like wordpress.org commenting better, I never have to log into anything like I usually do on wordpress.com and blogger. Occasionally that is enough to stop me from commenting all together (I'm lazy and I don't like logging into and out of whatever google account I happen to be using at the time)

  16. You are a sweetheart for re-allowing (is that even a word?) anonymous comments! Thank you!
What I was going to say is do what you need to do to banish them thar spammers from your blog - spam and martinis do NOT belnd well! *lol* Yep, moved up to martinis for now...once summer comes I'll be making the switch to gin & tonics again. Have to keep malaria at bay somehow... *winks*

Make the jump! Make the jump!! We only live once so try anything and everything that perks your interest - provided it doesn't hurt anyone in the process, that is...

Keep on keeping on my dear!

    Love,
    Mugsy
