a wolf in winter

oonaballoona | a sewing blog | By Hand London Victoria boucle coat in process

Lately, in protestation of Winter, I've been wearing summer clothing indoors. From the second I get out of bed to the moment I have to drag myself out into Actual Weather, it's a tropical climate of the mind.

Currently, I'm creating winter wear, but I'm wearing a neon green bra, a tank top imprinted with a giant pineapple and the siren call "Aloha From Honolulu," a pair of black n' gold (GO STEELERS) culotte-parachute-harem pants that are made less Man Repellant by the fact that they are black n' gold (GO STEELERS), and an extra long dangly necklace. An extra long dangly necklace is key. But I can't seem to get fair weather stitching going under the machine. I tried, I snagged several yards of springy floral fabric from my beloved janky store, only to make an underlined cocktail dress that is on the docket for so much Dior inspired adornment that it will surely cause me to melt in anything above 70 degrees.

SEVENTY DEGREES. DO YOU BELIEVE SUCH A TEMPERATURE STILL EXISTS?

This morning there are eight thousand handmade pieces on my bloglovin'roll screaming at me to jump on the spring bandwagon: Orange! Orange and Blue!! Flowers!!! Feathers!!!! ENTIRE PINK GALAXIES!!!!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR, WOMAN?! Suzanne even took the bandwagon OUT INTO THE ATMOSPHERE TODAY

People, it's disgusting outside. Suzanne is a badass.

We make the jump to daylightspeed this very weekend with an extra hour of sun (assuming the sun still cares to grace us with its presence), so it's time to get on the stick. After I finish up the lavender boucle hanging out on the form, it's warm weather stitching. Friends in cold climes, have you made the switch yet?

  1. Are you my three year old!!! She's been on cold weather protest since November - no shoes, no socks, tiny skirts and sleeveless dresses. Sometimes (I confess) that I just give up with her, wrap her up in a blanket and throw her in the car sans clothes. I, however, have been wearing winter clothes, BUT I admit that I have started the summer stitching. No more coats in this house.

    1. i'd say that's about right! there are times i refuse to put on anything heavier than a wrap. i stomp outside and then ruggy asks me all night if i'm cold, grinning.

  2. Nope, no switching yet. Snow still covers the ground and we had an ice storm yesterday. I've been sewing snuggling velour pullovers, cozy Dolores tops, and Hudson pants are on the horizon.

You bring all the sunshine I need, Oona!

  3. That cold from NY this past weekend seaped through every level of clothing I had on and shocked me so hard that I don't even know if Spring is coming. lol I have 4 spring UFOs and the UFOs keep piling because I can't bring myself to finish anything I don't see myself wearing anytime soon lol SMH!

  4. Nope. And even when this awful weather goes away you know there are still cool days into May. Hey some years my birthday is an inferno and sometimes it's a cold dreary mess. Can you tell that I believe that spring is nevah coming...but then again I feel that way every year at this time of the year.

  5. I'm just gonna whisper this...but Mother Nature is dangling spring like a carrot on a stick here in the PNW. So, yes! I'm madly rooting through my stash for fabrics that speak spring...which is kinda my universal language, ya think?

I'm pleased as punch that I could send a little sunshine your way Oona! Thanks so much for the link! My winter protest always involves bare feet {in the house} and a zippy colour on my toes!

    1. PNW'er here too! Yes, Spring is very much in the air around here. Ornamental and fruit trees are all in bloom... and not a bee in sight! Also still getting night frosts! Hoping we still get some fruit on the trees this fall! BTW Oona, there is a Saori weaving group there in NYC... called "Loop of the Loom" and they are planning an exhibit in April at Tenri Gallery.

    2. ooh thanks denise, i will check it out! i guess since you bring loopiness and sue brings colorful coats, i can't be too mad atcha for your PNW spring. even though there's snow accumulating here RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE.

  6. If it is any colsolation, I am still making summer clothing and I live in the Southern Hemisphere. I can't get my head around winter gear yet. I know I need to get proactive but when it is between mid twenties (celcius) and early thirties it is hard to imagine it will ever cool down although I know it will in fact we sometimes even get snow. I don't like winter so I do sympathise.

    1. Still making summer clothing too - even a beach wrap. I should get on to cooler weather sewing soon, or I'll be caught out once the temperature does drop!

    2. HOLD OUT AND MAKE THAT SUMMER CLOTHING AS LONG AS YOU CAN, I SAY!

  7. I am trying to switch but more freezing rain and 0 degree temps, so I might give in and make a red winter coat!

  8. Currently wearing a sleevless pale tan dress printed with large pink / red and lavendar flowers (fully lined, of course), with black tights, black shrug-style sweater, and black wedge shoes. All this in celebration of not only seeing the sun yesterday, but the fact that it's no longer -30 C in the mornings here (Toronto, Ontario, Canada, btw) My one day of protest, nice and loud before that stupid snowstorm we're expecting for tomorrow... :P

Happy pink sewing - I plan on drinking until pink elephants become my closest friends, it's about the only pink I can stand! *lol*

    All hail Oona!!

  9. Well, I have Raynaud's disease (my body is convinced that it has hypothermia by the mere suggestion of a chill), so no summer wearing for me yet. HOWEVER, I absolutely refuse to sew any more cold weather clothing. My sewing queue looks positively tropical.

    1. ack, so tropical layers for you? a bohemian summer vibe?

    2. I have Raynaud's, too! It's not very fun, is it?? I'm glad you're motivated to sew tropical... I'm just not motivated to sew anything at all right now!

  10. I am just convinced winter will never end. Never. Still plotting out plans for clothes with sleeves, long legs and wool interlinings.

  11. Here in Northern Florida, it was 78 degrees on yesterday, but I was stuck in bed with a cold and couldn't get out.

  12. Oh I've been in the spring summer sewing bandwagon for a while now!!!! Bring on the sunshine cause I'm ready for it!!!

  13. I won't tell you how warm it was here today. It was wonderful. Spring is coming. And I still have an unfinished winter coat on my dress form...

  14. I'm sticking with my all-black wardrobe due to creeping winter-waistline spread. Perhaps I need to make some floral boot-toppers, as we Bostonians will be stepping through slush nigh into May.

    1. now that's some interesting seasonal sewing. for real, you're going to need floral waders.

  15. Yes, we Houstonians run the gamut of extreme temperatures, enabling me to see for two seasons during the so called winter months. No wardrobe storage in these parts. We have gone from 73 in the last 12 hours to a 35 degree low. Yesterday it was sleeveless bliss and today, boots and a coat.

  16. I hear you! It's 11 degrees today, but I've been in Spring sewing mode since January. But then again, I started fall sewing in July, so I give equal time, just not at the usual time period.

  17. I have a jacket to make (spring weight, but it'll really only get worn during our 'winter') and then that's it. I'm done. It's on to floaty silks and breezy voiles from here on out! I'd really like to get better about making more time for my winter sewing as I feel like my cold weather wardrobe is seriously lacking - but making the switch in September when it's still 90+ degrees seems unnatural... Anyway, loved the inspiration from our Southern hemisphere pals, and those brave northern ladies! Keep your chin up up there! Spring WILL come!!

  18. Oh! Yes! Spring, hurry up! I am feeling very tempted to sew something pretty, lightweight, and floral but I am being very indecisive. Something I can wear now or something pretty and fun that I won't wear for at least six weeks?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've been on spring sewing for awhile, but only the planning mode. I'm only just completing a pair of culottes today as my first make. Spring will come, we must have faith!
I'd love to organize a picnic in The Park in April or May for the sewing locals, what do you think? Something to look forward to and sew for. Plus, I'll bet most of us are surprisingly exciting when it comes to the culinary aspect. And we'll need to sneak in alcohol. Perhaps disguised in lemonade!
Can you tell I'm over winter?

    ReplyDelete

    1. ABSOLUTELY! yo know, that "sew weekly" meetup years ago was supposed to be a picnic, hence the oddball theme that no one (including me, the weirdo who picked it) understood. HA! i'd raise my hand to supply the lemonade part :)

  20. Haven't started spring sewing yet but I've thinking about going thru the stash of warm weather fabrics and matching them up to patterns so I have a sewing plan. The forecast for early next week is mid 40's and that sounds so warm! It was -6 when I left for work this morning.

  21. I have been dealing with winter by leaving it behind and basking in Florida sunshine. It's 26 here. What's that in fahrenheit…..80? 600? -20? I don't know that system. It's hot and my skin in finally healing, just in time to fly back north for the spring flooding.

  22. And this is why you should all move to California because it's 80 degrees at the moment...actually it hasn't really gone below 70 this whole winter and its no fair because I haven't even gotten to wear ANY cold weather clothes at all.

  23. It's not quite Spring here yet...... But there are moments when the weather has a go and we get a lovely day. Otherwise, it's still coat weather. I'm just praying for no cloud or rain next Friday because we have the whole school out watching the Solar Eclipse. I am so excited.. It can be freezer cold, but no cloud please.
We are changing our clocks on the 29 March.
