Friday Floral Flares

OH HAI GUYS! BIG NEWS! WE'VE MOVED TO CALI FOR GOOD AND I'M STARTING A PATTERN LINE BASED ENTIRELY ON NEON COLORS AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES!

Supremely lame April Fool's joke. Y'all, I hate April Fool's jokes. Probably because I am so very susceptible to falling for all this tomfoolery. THIS MALARKEY! I instituted a "Trust no one" rule on this day when I succumbed to a Burdastyle joke eight years ago. I fell so well, they quoted me in the joke reveal. Hold up, I'm having a Battlestar Galactica moment here. Have I told you this before?

Anyhoo, yes, completely gullible. Really, everyday, so I'm a prime target. Ruggy actually proposed to me on April 1st! Yes, he did. And, as we lounged under a willow tree in dappled sunlight, he lovingly crooned April foooOOOOOooooools. Yes, I did smack him. Yes, he took it back. (The joke part.) Couldn't blame him, though--several months before that, I'd taken his nonchalant musing of Hey mebbe we should start looking at wedding dates as a bonafide proposal and was off to the races booking venues 6 seconds after he uttered his thoughts out loud. I kind of stole his actual proposal from him. Dude. Your bad. You spoka de word wedding.

However, I bear no ill will towards any of you pranksters! Joke away! I have nothing comical for you. But I do have MAGICAL FLORAL FLARES OF AWESOMENESS. They make me laugh! I hope they make you laugh too! HEY! MAYBE I DO HAVE JOKES AFTER ALL!

Even if I'm the butt of the joke...

HAAAAR DEE HAR HAAAAAARRRRRRR.

So. These flares. I dove into these flares the day after I got my hands on this floral poly ponte-like knit (beware, jokesters! that's an affiliate link) from this mini fabric haul. They were born out of a need to fill the burning desire that this vintage pattern created in my brain. That there cover promised me a front seam! There is no front seam, just some bogus instruction to iron a freaking pleat! WHY IS EVERYONE TRYING TO PRANK ME?!

WHATEVER, LINE DRAWING! I cut the front leg pattern right up the middle, added some seam allowance, some side seam tapering, some neon coral topstitching, and basically went where my brain told me to without too much regard for perfection.

At under 4 bucks a yard, I wasn't too stressed about it. And hey lookee here, this cheapo baby was no joke, it sewed like a dream and feels like I'm wearing secret pajamas. Secret pajamas that are quite likely obvious to everyone in the surrounding vicinity.

Well, my friends, that's what I've got for you on this Most Holy Of Court Jester Days. How's your Friday going? Any foolishness? Any expectation that I'll come back tomorrow and tell you I was just joshing with these crazypants?

(spoiler alert: I'M SO NOT.)

  1. The one time I "got" my father with an April Fool's prank, I phoned him at work to tell him that "the mean cow" had jumped the fence again. That cow would kick and/or bite you as soon as look at you, and she was bad to escape the pasture. (You never realize how close cows are to deer until you watch a cow clear a fence. Beautiful and frightening at the same time.)

He phoned neighbor after neighbor, and was about to call the sheriff to round up the she-devil, until he realized the date.

It's been over 35 years, and he has not yet forgiven me for that joke.

  2. Speaking as seemingly the most gullible person in Texas I completely sympathize with your April Fool's feelings. Also, I am right there with you with these pants. I love them!!! I now have to check out your fabric link and see if they have some left, and I hope you don't mind if I try to copy something. The front seam worked out great, and, by the way, there's no way these could be mistaken for PJ's. They just look lovely. They remind me of a pair of flares I had when I was a kid back in the 70's. Flower power!

He got few real angry phone calls from my gals. I got them too, since it aint cool not to share that one had moved on from her love of 10 years.

  4. OK, Friday Floral Flares Lady (queen of alliteration)...where did you get that fabric? No joke. And stretch and sew for the pattern? Man, you'd never guess. These pants are amazing. Loving the way you wear Spring when the weather dares to defy (and it does in NYC, right)?

  7. When I was a teenager my mom went crazy for Stretch and Sew. Crazy! I probably had those pants in a multitude of 70s groovy colors, and some amazing plaids. You would definitely beat me in a round of Who wore it better, I am just glad there are no photos of me to compare!

  10. I hate April Fools Day! No matter how ready for it I think I am - no one is going to fool me this year - someone always gets me. This year it was George Takei of all people. He posted on his Facebook page that he was going to be starring in a new sitcom on Lifetime. Then a few hours later he revealed that it was just an April Fools joke now I'm so sad and hoping that the reveal was actually the joke. [sigh]

Anyway... LOVE your awesome floral flares.

    1. And for even more meta...I know the guy who is in charge of George Takei's social media presence. He also co-wrote Allegiance with George. Earlier in the week, this guy started posting about how he was meeting with the DNC and Hillary's people to become part of their social media team. He's been on a Hillary tear for months so I totally bought into that one. Yeah, no.

    2. Takei! Takei's people! don't prank us with stuff that is not only plausible but highly desirable! maybe TV & DNC will take the pranks seriously and have some lightbulb moments...

  12. Oh, dude, these are super fun!!!!! That is the perfect fabric, and good for you for just adding those seams anyway!

As for the joke... Starting your own pattern line I might have fallen for, but moving to Cali forever? Too much! (PS I know you have eighty million other gigs, but I would totally go squirrelly and techno coloured for Kalkatroona Patterns. Just sayin') 😁

  19. Love those pants and the front seam. Your eye and brain lead you to wonderful places. ^_^

I brought in donuts and kolaches to work. I'd forgotten that it was April 1st and I was wondering why it took so long for people to eat them.

  22. Oh you got me with that April fool! And the front seam - what a swizz - iron it... ahem. I like what you did and that you have comfy secret PJs. I once wore PJs out as if they were trousers. But when I look at the photographs I realised I fooled no one.
