fixin up the joint

the fact that i have no machines (no machines that i like) has produced untold amounts of amateur web design round these parts!  BEHOLD THE SIDEBAR!  THE SIDEBAR OF AMAZINGNESS!!! MY APPEARANCES IN LOFTY REALMS!  MY STORY! MY CLOSET! PEEP MY ENTIRE CLOSET! THE LINKS!!!!! godsakes people THE LINKS ARE BACK! THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE HEIGHTS OF MY HTML DIY-DOM! I AM THE KING OF THE FOREST!!! THE UNDISPUTED KING!!!!!!!!!!

whatever with the queen crap, we all know kings have the power.  so i'll be a king, thankyaverrrrymuch.  i'm certainly acting the part.  speaking of, just last week, in my other line of work, a 57 year old man, a quite powerful 57 year old man, hid from me.  saw me coming, and actually DUCKED behind his dinner date.  from little ol' 5 foot 2 and three quarters me.

it was delicious.

so, my dear and royal friends, what say you?  do you like my webby hammerings?  any problems? actually, i think it might be loading pretty slow and the colors won't switch on my post titles no matter what i do and the post font isn't playing either and Every Single Link on the site opens in a new page which might be super annoying.  FEH!  still! the emperor's new clothes, and all.  do tell, either way! for you, the king is as always in a very receptive mood...

  5. Love the new digs, but woman, you need to get a working machine back soon!

  6. Did you use though Kai shears to fix the place up? I knew they were awesome, but that's impressive. While you have downtime, hightail it over to the Met's incredible Charles James exhibit. It will be the SQUEE heard 'round the world.

  9. Oh I'm so glad you finally put in a "closet" function, I love when blogs have them - so much easier to drool over people's me-made garments.

  10. I can get wrapped up in web design when I'm not sewing. Photoshop too! The archives page looks awesome! I've been meaning to do it to my own site. Sometimes HTML doesn't accept the code, as in the case of your font and color. Sometimes, by putting "!important!" after the code will make it accept it. Also, you want pages to open in a new window. It increases the time readers are on the first page, which helps rating/stats.

  12. Amazing new blog design! I like that the pages open up to new ones. That closet page must have taken days to link back to all the pages on all the sites! BTW, the Janome is waiting so you could be sewing...I'm just saying!

  13. om nom nom - PRETTYNESS. The look is AWESOME. Although when I go stalk you and look in your closet the page title is , which you might wanna change ;-) (and by page title, I mean that thingie that appears on the tab, it's usually fairly near the beginning of the HTML awesomeness that you have produced to change) But hey! I can look at all your pretty clothes - in a pretty website... :-D

    1. haha! yes, i used portia's bitesize blogger trick of hiding the title, but really all i needed to do was leave the page title blank. somehow it seems cleaner to have pages show up without a post title...maybe i'll make mini banners...

  14. I like it! But I can tell that my Sunday morning is going to be spent looking through your closet...so much fun!

  15. Well done! I'm super happy that I can finally easily find any of your makes at a given time. I feel like I'm always referencing them and then I have to go delving in to try and find them.
Soooo when I get back I need some fabric for one of those kaftan patterns I bought, and I would love to have the reigning queen of 70s sewing help a girl out in choosing.

  16. YOUR CLOSET MAKES MY HEART EXPLODE!! So lovely to see all that colour in one space.

One thing - if you want to make your social navigation buttons smaller and more contained, you can make a sidebar shaped space in photoshop or Gimp (free), say 250 pixels times 500 pixels, line them up in a grid, and use an image mapper to break up that big image into links. I use this one: http://www.image-maps.com/

It basically lets you create "hyperlinks" around each specific button. You import the jpeg, set the links, and it spits out code for you to put in an html button in your sidebar.

  19. Happy sidebar! I love the closet idea. Can I steal it? I tried to start pinning it all just to have one big catalog, but then felt so silly pinning myself. Is that weird?

    1. steal away! and i started pinning myself a few years back, yep, feels weird... but it makes me so organizationally happy....

  21. OMG! A closet feature! Yes!

Also, I really happen to like when links open in a new tab, it makes it easy to peruse them later instead of backtracking all the time. Others may have a different preference though and you'll never make everyone happy, so just do what you like. :-)

You're really 5'2"?! Apparently I need to make my hubby crouch down more when photographing me or something....you always look so tall...

  22. I would love to hear that story from your other line of work one day ;) Like the new sidebar!

  23. Ooo, very nice! And you've just reminded me to update my projects page. Also, I have a tall friend who has taken photos of me sometimes from his 6'3" viewpoint. Those angles make me look like a little pixie - makes me laugh! I should post some.

  24. I haven't gotten out of your closet yet... if I'm still coherent when I leave I may attempt to offer you some feedback on the website... but for now, just thanks for making it a separate link so I could stumble my way back here to comment :)
