golden slumbers

I've had a bit of tunnel vision over the past couple weeks, where the stress reliever of sewing somehow became the victim of said stress. The embellished fabric you see above was the star in my own private horror flick. THE THINGS I DID TO THIS FABRIC.

I didn't realize that stress played such a major role in this garment until after I wrote the post, so there's no mention of the driving force behind hacking these golden rows to pieces. (And no worries on the cause of stress, simply life things that happen, yadda yadda, let's sew.)

See what I Frankensteined this monster into at The Sewing Party, for my second post. Comments are now locked & loaded over there, I'd be interested to hear if you think this garment turned out to be a dream or a nightmare...honestly!

(Also, RIP Wes Craven. Thanks for the screams.)

  1. The pants were not a perfect fit, but they didn't look that bad. I do like the skirt better though and you did lovely stitching with the gold thread. Hooray for George.

  2. Total dream! How could anything sparkly be a nightmare?

  3. The sparkly stitching is basically TDF. Every time I saw it on Instagram, I wanted to like the screen. Ruggy was right, though, about the drape. When I read that, I said to myself ...Ruggy is right.
Now that I have been persuaded that fancy stitching can be a good thing, I might try something like this on a tunic, but I don't think you are really a tunic kind of dressing person.
Well, you know - you learn from every project, right?

  4. and I don't mean I want to like the screen, I am taking about LICKING that screen when I see the sparkly stitching.

    1. HAHAAA. i thought you meant lick! and also, ruggy is pretty stoked that his tagline is now a thing.

i've actually been thinking about a silk gazar tunic, only super wide...though i guess that makes it not-a-tunic? i'd love to see what you'd do with fancy stitching!

    1. FOR REAL, photos are the death of confidence sometimes! of course no one is staring at your frozen crotch IRL, but once you see the photo you can't unsee it ;)

  6. I don't think the pants looked bad at all but what's important is how they look to you and how you feel in them. And I do like the skirt better. Good fix.

  7. I need a cup of tea (tequila) and a lie down after that epic story! But a great outcome. I also wake in the night and solve problems in he absence of anything else to do. Often sewing ones too. The world seems a much simplified, f eerie place, at 3pm, doesn't i.

  9. I prefer the skirt over the pants, but that stitching is wonderful!! What a fun embellishment! Great way to save a project you didn't like by turning it into something you love to wear.

  10. What a smart man you have! The skirt looks fantastic, though -- can't get over the stitching / gold / orange perfection. Even though the pants didn't turn out perfect, you executed that save flawlessly! I tend to set aside failed projects for...ever... generally gotta avoid the bad sewing juju! Here's to saving & fixing!

    1. you know, i probably would have stuffed these in a corner for a few months if they weren't meant for a sewing party post. i usually save my "fails" eventually, but never this quickly ;)!

  11. I like the skirt. But what you like is what matters.

  12. Oh yes, the skirt is the money. The pants have potential too, and I can only speak from my own perspective, but as much as I do love the wide leg intention, the fit would have driven me nuts to the extent of cutting them up too. Even so, I'm sure they fit just as good as many a RTW. Perhaps we are all too hard on ourselves. The gold stitching is just amazing. You had my eyes wandering over to the right as I sat down at my own Pfaff today. I probably only use a total of six stitches - you have welcomed in the guilt monster - I need to experiment a bit don't I!

    1. oooooo i'd love to see you in this pattern, you would kill in that slit! i do think we're too hard on ourselves fit wise, i certainly have RTW pants that look worse, but ugh-- when i do it to myself i just can't take it!

WANDER, GIRL. USE THOSE STITCHES!!! the front panel of your maxi skirt pattern is dying for some fancy stitches. and my printer is dying for some $%@*()! toner.

  13. I love your decorative stitching! So stunning on your fabric. I do like the skirt better but I'm excited about what you've done with your fabric. Is there a way to follow Sewing Party?

  15. Wow! I love your skirt! And it looks so good on you! I love the embroidery I like the way you carried the line from the top of the slit up to the waist. And wouldn't it be fun if you continued that line up to the shoulder and somehow made that shoulder the focal point. Just thinking out loud. Your work is so inspirational! Makes me want to go out and try it. Love your blog! Thanks!!
