Deck the Halls with Yards of Fabric

Deck the Halls with Yards of Fabric | oonaballoona by marcy harriell

Wouldn't it be great if we could bathe our houses in jacquard and brocade and taffeta...

and have those lovely yards serve as holiday decorating?

We could include lacy neon exposed zippers...

and giant statement earrings...

and we'd pleat fabric all around corners, and stairs, and windows...

and use EVERY INCH OF IT to decorate our BODIES when the holidays are over.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL SUSTAINABLE SEWING.

The deets:

She's a simple, lined, princess seamed bodice (self-drafted, but you could use a pattern like this or this). Although the vertical seams are boned with rigeline, there's pulling across the front, either due to Thanksgiving Feasting (no regrets), or, maybe a darted foundation is the key to erasing those lines? I'm in the middle of Vogue 1426, which uses just that, so we shall see. WE SHALL SEE!

The skirt is a giant rectangle of fabric, pleated and draped to fit the waist circumference, sans side seam. Sort of a column dress! There's no vent action, so you're not running any marathons in this. But you are going to walk a red carpet in it, nice and slow. And if you're like me, after you're done, you'll drape it over your bedside chair, like a decoration...to gaze at All. Year. Long.

    1. Thank you! Lined up top with a slightly stretchy cotton sateen, and unlined bottom. The fabric is nice and opaque!

Yeah that zip. I LOVE IT. I should bought ten!

  2. Oona is certain,
    her style transcends,
    from where the carpet begins,
    to where the road ends.

    Nature's child,
    all glorious and grown,
    fashion borrowers,
    best take out a loan.

    The hair and toes,
    to tease is her mode,
    those earrings sway,
    atop a confection she sewed.

    We gape, gawk, and gush,
    just an onlooker's zoo.
    The zipper bears teeth,
    only Rob can undo.

    1. Ok. You are officially the best. I read this yesterday morning, haven woken up FAR too early, while Rob was still asleep. It was all I could do to keep my coffee in my mouth as my jaw dropped on the last stanza. I'm shocked I didn't yell in glee.

  4. What a delightful dress and in my 32x24x34 years (about your age I imagine) I would have rocked that dress, just like you do. Pity I did not know how to do a SBA at the time.
Beautiful and the colors are wonderful on you.
Often those horizontal lines indicate either pulling from an area that is too small or drooping. See how the darted, boned, (perhaps in the center front also) foundation does. Perhaps you can figure out a way to add one to this dress.

    1. Or maybe the bodice is just a bit too long. What happens when you take a little tuck?

    2. Thank you 😊 And you should rock this style as long as and whenever you desire!

I think I'm a little bigger in the back than when I stitched it last April! Lengthwise, it does hit right at the waist, but now that you mention it, I wonder where the bust apex falls....I see a muslin of this self drafted jammie in my future. The V1426 has a darted CF foundation so I'm excited to see what that does!

  5. lovely- but rigilene is THE DEVIL'S WORK! Bin it, use proper metal boning, preferably in a corselet foundation, and stick some centre front to avoid that crumpling.

    1. HAHAHAAA!!! I've used both--I snagged a roll of rigilene on a whim and really liked the sewability of it. But you're right--I skipped CF this time, I should go back in and add it!

    1. Thanks! Sadly I've lost track of where the fabric came from--but I saw its almost identical twin in my favorite "Janky Store" (It's a Material World). And I know the zip is from Pacific Trimmings :)
