like white on rice

i wore this dress two christmases ago during the peak of my, ahem, monthly strife. no, let's call a spade a spade. it was an all out NUCLEAR WAR in my uterus.

ballsy, no?

although said strife is now a happy little walk through the park, this baby has stayed in the closet since then. you really can't go galavanting around in a floor length white dress more than once.

it's made from this great vintage pattern i swapped with the ever rocking emilykate. loooove this pattern and will use it for the summer soon! i seriously made this in one night. i got home from work to find a gene kelly marathon on.  ruggy was sound asleep in another time zone, and i was going stag to my office christmas party the next day. i had a very sad black sweater dress to wear. gene told me it simply wouldn't do. (he said it with a gentle smile though, he's so caring, that man.) so, downstairs landlord and his rule of no noise after 8pm be damned, i whipped out the vintage jackhammer sewing machine and worked in a happy musical frenzy till 3 am.

but... what the hell do i do with this white elephant now?! dye it? keep it for my possible future twin daughters to fight over (not preggers, mom and dad.)? it's made of this great textured jersey knit, and it's actually kind of heavy. i was nice and toasty that night. i even tied it up into a high knot when the evening carried me & my coworkers to a salsa club.

advice, anyone?

  1. wow, iLOVE the dress! i am a big sucker for those cute textures. I would keep it as is and try to wear next year, but you probably want a different dress then. would chopping off some length and making it a fall/spring dress with boots work?

  2. yeah, the texture was what hooked me! also i think this was a dollar a yard find. i've been thinking about chopping it off, but i wonder if the fabric is too plain for that? it's dramatic in a maxi but maybe blah in a midi?

  3. I think your dress is gorgeous, though I don't have much in the way of advice about it. I would like to discourage you from wishing for twin girls. Twins are a LOT of work and having two heads of hair to comb in addition to yours in no fun, lol

  4. This dress is gorgeous! Do you think the fabric would take dye well? If so, you could really choose something fun. Perhaps dye some leftover scraps to test out colors?

  5. Fab. U. Lous. And I think it would still be fabulous with a couple of feet of fabric cut off.

  6. Ya know... I'm in the same boat with my wedding dress. Its simple and gorgeous and I want to wear it, but who wears a dress with a train except in her wedding? I've been thinking to cut it off and make a baby blanket with the bit cut off (its such a soft, silky fabric). Taking some off the bottom (making it tea length) would be fun.

  7. Dye it! Red or black... or maybe charcoal?

It's simply gorgeous, an that neckline (front and back) is really unique!

  8. Loooove this dress! I think it's beautiful as is but it could also make a great longish shirt. Paired with skinny jeans and ballet flats or boots? (If I'm totally off base just ignore this!)

nettie & jacqueline: twins both, eh? they run rampant on my mom AND my dad's side of the family so i may not have a choice. and god help our neighbors when i try to comb their hair.

  12. What size is that dress? it is gorgeous! I'd wear it over and over and defy anyone to say anything about it. But it would make an an awesome jumpsuit.

  13. welcome miss a! it is a size, umm, new zealand 10, which is a 32 1/2 bust, which is most definitely smoke and mirrors on me. it's a very stretchy and forgiving knit!

  14. Twins?!? Be still my heart. Okay you fooled your dear old Mom for a second there. Love that dress/gown. I would keep it as is, vary the accessories and wear the hell out of it!

  15. So late to the party, but rock the hell out of it at least one more time! But if it must change, I agree with dyeing it some fabulous vibrant shade of magenta and turning it into a sassy short party dress.

  16. yo, where did my comment go?! it went something like this: there's always a party going on here. which i guess sounds kind of cheesy, and the peeps at blogger central were prolly just trying to do me a favor...

  17. ya know, I'd leave it as it is because it looks amazing on you & I know there aren't many places/events to wear something like this very often but when the time comes you'll have the PERFECT thing ready to go. Besides you have the perfect excuse to go out accessory shopping so you can style it up or down just right.
I also have twin daughters too (4 years old) and they are amazing. I have to admit to 'forgetting' to comb their hair sometimes....What a terrible mummy I am.
