a quick note

too much ironing makes brain mushy.

so YEAH if you happen to get my RSS feed (which, what exactly is that?  is it like email?  you can do that here now! it's the little "oona in your inbox" addition to the sidebar.  but isn't that different than RSS?  yes, i know i can google it.  i want a factual and/or made up answer; bonus points for made up answer that is more believable than fact.  at this point i have strayed too far from the original sentence and will begin again).  so YEAH if you happen to get my RSS feed, then you got my birthday post waaaaaaaaaaaaaay early.  like, over a month early.  to be fair, i start thinking about my birthday on january second.  but still.

this error in clicking could be due to the fact that i have been involved in a self made assembly line for the past four hours, and my brain is a bunch of 1/4 inch lines.  or it could be the manhattans.  ruggy made them with bulleit rye whiskey tonight.  as he called out pour #2, i was in the middle of a brainstorm involving compiling a wee blogger list.  "save" and "publish" are very much too close for comfort.  thwarted!  by my own true love, rye whiskey!  (you know i love you ruggy.)

at any rate, if you happened to see it during the two seconds it took to correct my error, or if you have this RSS everyone is speaking of (really, WHAT IS IT), mum is le word!  the upside is i realize i need to put up details up next week to give peeps time.  time is of the essence.

ooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooh i am so excited.

UPDATE: all this tech talk pushed me over the edge and i've finally gone all custom domain.  SMELL ME.  ruggy has been holding oonaballoona.com for years (seriously, i do love him more than rye whiskey) and i finally switched. this shouldn't gum up the works for anyone except moi-- when you go all custom, you lose your blog roll.  i'll be adding that back this weekend. please let me know ifyou have any problems!

  1. an RSS feed is a copy of whatever you put on your blog, including pictures. it arrives in a totally different format from an email. it arrives in your google reader or your atom reader or yahoo reader. some blogs offer only wordpress (whats that all about?) and that gives you a heads-up in your email to let you know that there's a blog waiting in the wings for you. you would click to acess that.

the best way to learn it is to try it in all it's forms. that way you can determine what's best for you. all feeds have different features and some are better than others for different people.
i like google because i can cut and paste any blog, even if google is not offered as one of their choices. also, it allows updates to accumulate for - i don't know how long - while i'm away, and catch up later. if you decide to give any RSS feed a try, please post about your experience and let us know what you think.

  2. The Blogger blogroll "Blogs I'm Following" blog list blogvention (I don't actually know what it's called...thing on yer homepage where you can follow blogs) gives you the title and preview still, but it clicks through to nothing (so I got to the topic of the announcement and the gist but no further details).

Just so you know what another facet of it looks like!

(Mostly I am just leaving this comment so I can compliment you on your choice of whiskey though)

  3. I love learning the behind-the-scenes machinations of blogs and social media and am a have a SLIGHT bit more savvy with it than most of my pals, but there remain certain aspects of the tech-y side of blogging that my brain resists absorbing. RSS feeds is one of those aspects. So, your secret is safe with me cos I never knew it :o)

  6. I have no idea about all the technical mumbo-jumbo but if there are any folks using Google Reader, install the "next" button and you will love following blogs even more! It is MAGIC! it allows you to read all your waiting blog posts from others ON THEIR OWN SITE, not in the boring reader. No opening different blogs - just click 'next' in your toolbar. I did this about a year ago and it changed my (blog-reading) life! Here's a tutorial I found.

    1. now that's interesting... going to check into this "next" button. i hate that the reader takes all the pretty away-- for example, i spent a good couple weekend hours changing my blog header, and no one noticed. then i realized very few peeps actually click on a blog anymore! (or. the header was just met with "ho hums". i, on the other hand, am in love with it.)

  7. RSS stands for "Real Sewa-Saurus." By subscribing, you receive live alerts of the predatory tackling of fabric done by the wily spirits running rampant through the sewosphere with spinning rotary cutters in hand. These alerts come directly to your RSS Reader of choice (mine is Google Reader o' course). Sewasauruses in training can follow the RSS to learn where prey is abundant so they too can join in the hunt. Others use it strategically to know when to hide when a raucous sewasaurus meet-up is coming to town.

  9. Yay for having Google Reader, I get to see the post.
I used Google Reader, wordpress reader, bloglovin and Feeddler Rss. I mainly use the Google Reader and Feedler Rss (which is linked to G reader).

Anyway, can we comment on your Promaballoona, or should we wait until you officially post it?

    1. nah, stay old fashioned. i do the same thing. that said, over the past few days i've been using bloglovin, you see updates and pictures with a bit of text, very pretty clean format, then when you click on a post it takes you to the full page of the blog, header and all. i likes it. you can categorize your blogs too, which is helpful when you have 200!

  15. Yes RSS is the same as subscribing in a reader. I've done a post on it here (which'll work for you because you have a google/ gmail account and Reader uses the same). There are other options but Reader is the least sucky of the free ones. XD

  17. Oh, I have so done the mistake post than scrambled to try and delete it forever in readers. I subscribe to my own blog so I can see what it looks like and if I've accidentally published something.

Someone probably explained it already but rss is the same thing as feed. It's a very simple code format (similar to but different than html), which enables blogs to be easily read through rss readers (no matter what reader you use). Most blog software automatically produce feeds for blogs. So whether you are Blogger or Wordpress or Tumblr or whatever, I can subscribe in Google Reader simply by hitting the "subscribe" link that I've installed in my bookmarks when I'm visiting a blog I like. It finds and picks up the feed from that blog. In other readers you might have to type in the blog address to subscribe, but most readers will automatically find and pick up the feed that a blog is publishing.

So technically, nobody *needs* a "subscribe" button on their site--that's more to encourage subscribers. I can subscribe with or without those buttons. As for the blogs that only offer Wordpress subscriptions--this is basically the same idea as Google FriendConnect--it only subscribes you to blogs in a Wordpress dashboard. The wordpress blog still has a feed, even if there is no subscribe button for it. An email subscription is not rss, but it works similarly--it strips out a lot of code so that the posts can be read through most email software.

Did I geek out too much? Hope that makes sense for somebody!
